Hatherton and Walgherton Parish Council

Website accessibility

Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018

These regulations apply to our council website.  The necessary changes have been incorporated to meet the Regulations and to enhance the accessibility of our site.  The need for the changes is explained on the Government website at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/accessibility-requirements-for-public-sector-websites-and-apps

The recommended guidelines are covered by an international standard which can be read at https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/.  Hatherton and Walgherton Parish Council will modify its site to meet the guidelines so far as is reasonably possible but without incurring excessive cost to the residents of the Parish.

Further details of the process involved and the results for this website are contained in the Council's accessibility statement which can be downloaded here.  In brief, we have endeavored to provide full accessibility by:

  • use of high contrast colours
  • making the menu and links accessible by keyboard, mouse or touch
  • ensuring text wraps round on a small screen or with text enlarged
  • provision of a website map
  • labeling input areas on forms used on the site
  • providing alternative text for all illustrations
  • maintaining a simpler design with one area of main text on each page
  • addition to the site of a widget (see the bottom of the page) providing for further accessibility options
  • publishing PDF (portable data format) files in an accessible format called PDF/A

Any users who have ideas to further enhance the accessibility of our site are welcome to contact the webmaster.
